Yes, sharks are getting some bad press right now. But any marine expert will tell you that they are an important part of the puzzle when it comes to maintaining a healthy ocean and planet. Maybe Lush’s connection with Discovery Channel can help change the tide.
The company has once again partnered with Discover Channel’s Shark Week to help shed light on the important role sharks play. With every limited edition Shark Fin Soap bar purchased at Lush’s 220+ North American stores or online at lush.com (between July 5-19), Lush will donate 100% of the $5.95 sale price to United Conservationists to support the FinFree campaign. FinFree is designed to address the mass slaughter of shark to supply consumer demand for shark fins.
Lush says the 2015 campaign continues the conversation it began more than four years about shark conservation and ocean health.
And this 450 million-year old-species could really use some positive PR—especially in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Kidding aside, the issue is real. According to Lush, demand for shark fin soup and other shark products has led to a decline in shark populations by more than 90% in just a few decades. In fact, close to 100 million sharks are killed each year, threatening the stability of marine ecosystems around the world.
Lush’s Shark Fin Soap, which is made from vegan, cruelty-free ingredients including seaweed, sea salt, lime and lavender, has a paper fin in the top of the soap. Lush says the fin offers a fun reminder of the very important topic of shark finning.
And maybe this cute bar soap can help us switch gears and remember that even sharks could use a bit of love every now and then.
