GERMANY: Until last year, the German ESA-Astronaut Thomas Reiter participated in a space mission that sets milestones for European space travel. His main goal was to evaluate life on the ISS and its subsystems — including the health and safety of the staff on board through scientific experiments called Astrolab.
In addition to standard tests, for the first time the largest human organ, the skin, was monitored. Courage + Khazaka from Cologne, Germany, a manufacturer in the field of skin analyzing instruments, placed non-invasive equipment at the disposal of the astronauts, to check the hydration level of the skin surface (with a Corneometer), quality of the barrier function of the skin (with a Tewameter) and the surface structure (with a Visioscan). These devices are known all over the world as standard instruments in dermatological and cosmetic research.
