While consumer groups question the safety of hydroquinone, most dermatologists insist that it is still their "go-to" ingredient for skin lightening. Now, PrecisionMD, a New York, NY manufacturer of skin care products for physicians, said its Vivatia Brightening Complex containing 2% hydroquinone (HQ), is as effective for reducing skin pigmentation as a 4% HQ formulation. For consumers this means fast, dramatic results at a lower percentage of hydroquinone, according to company executives.
“The secret is in the first-ever proprietary foam technology system previously only available in prescription skin care products,” said Jeffrey Nugent, chief executive officer, PrecisionMD. “The products deliver highly concentrated levels and unique combinations of anti-aging ingredients while minimizing irritation, improving absorption and hydrating the skin.”
Hydroquinone typically fights with other brightening ingredients making it difficult to formulate, but PrecisionMD’s foam technology found a way to solve this problem. The Vivatia foam enables 2% hydroquinone to be combined with nine additional skin brightening ingredients, such as kojic acid, arbutin, licorice root and niacinamide, for visible results in as little as four weeks.
A recent blinded split face study examined 22 patients over a 12 week period of time. The study protocol had patients apply Vivatia 2% HQ twice daily to one side of the face while applying a 4% HQ product to the other side. Results were assessed at weeks 4, 8 and 12 by three different independent clinicians. Based on this blinded assessment, Vivatia matched the performance of the 4% HQ at weeks 4, 8 and 12 for mottled pigmentation and overall skin brightening.
“With the ability to get four percent HQ results with the new Vivatia two percent HQ Foam, our patients can now use this new system year round—and that’s a big deal,” said Brian Zelickson, MD, study investigator and board-certified dermatologist in Edina, MN.
Hydroquinone has often been referred to as the gold standard of skin brightening ingredients. However, many doctors recommend the lowest level required to achieve the desired results.
Vivatia’s Brightening Complex is sold individually or as part of a three-piece kit that includes an Active Repair Complex containing 0.5%, 0.75% or 1.0% retinol and a Gentle Cleanser.
