With “The Little Mermaid” making a splash at the box office since its $117.5 million Memorial Day weekend theatrical debut, the Mermaidcore aesthetic can be felt in waves throughout the beauty world and through summer 2023.
From effortless beach waves to the “wet look,” to mermaid braids, Top One Hair and Beauty has revealed the biggest trends to channel Princess Ariel played by first-time actress Halle Bailey.
Mermaid Braids
Bailey took the beauty world by storm with her red braid debut as Ariel, and the trend continues to make a splash. Since the lauded film’s Memorial Day weekend debut, there has been a 9,900% increase in global searches with 3.1 million TikTok views.
Mermaid Waves
The classic beach wave isn’t going anywhere this summer. With over 60.6 million TikTok views for the hashtag and a 147.2% increase in search interest in the last three months, this effortless look is dominating the “goddess of the sea” aesthetic.
Hair Jewels
While Ariel crooned “Part of Your World,” deciphering the “thingamabobs” humans use while scouring an underwater treasure chest, consumers are dipping into their own trove of bejeweled hair accessories and pearls to put the perfect touch on their mermaid locks. The aesthetic boasts over 4 million TikTok views and a Google search increase of 54.2% in the past three months.
Slick Back Hairstyle
Although the beauty world has been fully submerged in the slick-back wet hair look for decades, the trend has raked up a 41.2% global increase in searches since “The Little Mermaid” trailer was released in March, as well as 66.4 million TikTok views. Celebrities such as Zendaya, Lizzo and Emily Ratajkowski have sported the beach-inspired look.
Wet Look Hair
No better way to channel the inner mermaid than with glossy wet-look hair. Consumers are applying shiny hair oil or super strength gel to achieve a lived-in wet look. The trend has seen a 33.3% increase in searches this year, with over 19.3 million TikTok views.
