Sydell L. Miller died. She was the co-founder of Ardell, a false eyelash company, and Matrix Essentials, at one time, the largest professional hair care company in the world.
Miller died on February 25. She was 86. Her daughter, Stacey Halpern, said she suffered from a variety of illnesses.
Miller and her husband, Arnold Miller, invented the pre-cut eyelash kit—an invention that transformed false eyelash application from hours to minutes. In hair care, the couple revolutionized professional haircolor application. Matrix Essentials crème-based dyes enabled stylists to apply color exactly where they wanted.
Sydell Miller sold Matrix Essentials to Bristol Myers-Squibb for $400 million in 1994—two years after her husband died. The brand is now owned by L'Oréal.
In addition to Stacey Halpern, Miller is survived by another daughter, Lauren Spilman; a brother, Dennis Lubin; four grandchildren and three great granddaughters.
