The Cosmetic Industry Buyers and Suppliers (CIBS) association has announced this year’s winner of the Eugene M. Roberts Memorial Scholarship. The announcement and scholarship presentation came at the CIBS meeting and luncheon on April 13, at The Manhattan Club at Rosie O’Grady’s, in New York City.
This year’s scholarship recipient is Ivan J. Chen, a Rutgers senior. Chen, whose major is Applied Sciences, Packaging Engineering Option, has a cumulative GPA of 3.368. He has completed considerable course work in packaging with related areas in business and math. In addition, he recently completed a 6-month co-op at Fisher Price and is committed to a career in the packaging industry. Chen has plans to continue his education – he has enrolled in a Masters of Industrial Distribution program in the fall.
The CIBS Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 was presented to Chen, along with a one-year complimentary CIBS membership, and two luncheons.
Among those on hand to present the award and discuss the packaging engineering program and scholarship were Ted Boccuzzi, scholarship chairperson, Fred Bernath, the associate dean for academic affairs at Rutgers, and Erika Roberts, who thanked the CIBS board and members for the wonderful tribute to her late husband Eugene.
In discussing the Packaging Engineering curriculum at Rutgers, Associate Dean Bernath said that the university is emerging from a more than 10 year decline, which he attributed to the departure of some dynamic leaders at Rutgers, which left a void in a program.Bernath said that the school has taken steps to remedy the situation and recently appointed Hae Chang Gea, (HC), as the new director of Packaging Engineering. HC has been with Rutgers for 20 years, and was previously a professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department.
HC addressed the attendees about some of his plans for the program. He described a new undergraduate curriculum that is underway for the school of packaging, which will include a school wide certificate. Also, beginning in 2012, Rutgers will introduce a Masters of Packaging program. HC encouraged all to provide industry-related feedback, to accurately identify needs of the industry and skill sets required to excel in the packaging industry today. He urged attendees to consider sponsoring a senior design project, internship or co-op for the program. The close geographical distance of the school makes the cosmetic industry an attractive target for students, he said.
The next CIBS luncheon meeting will take place on June 8, at The Manhattan Club, 800 7th Ave, in New York City.
