Plant-based beauty brand Babo Botancials is leading the way forward in haircare packaging with the introduction of a sustainable haircare line housed in paper cartons.
With this new launch – consisting of a shampoo and conditioner trio – Babo Botanicals wants consumers to understand that recyclability does not equal sustainability. Per the brand, most of packaging’s environmental impact occurs long before it ever reaches consumers. To better understand the sustainability of packaging, the brand is urging consumers to consider material extraction, manufacturing, product transportation, consumption, and end-of-useful-life disposal.
Babo Botanicals worked with a third party to conduct a full lifecycle analysis (LCA) on common packaging materials: glass, plastic, aluminum, and paper. The LCA—which evaluates a material’s overall eco-impact starting with raw material extraction through end life and disposal—proved paper cartons have the lowest environmental impact across seven out of eight categories evaluated, and unveiled that glass and aluminum had the worst environmental impact in several categories, even more so than plastic. Glass and aluminum were the highest in fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions categories.
While not a curative option for sustainability, Babo Botanicals believes small steps create a bigger impact.
Haircare Line
Babo Botanicals first adult haircare line includes three shampoos and three conditioner collections: Nourishing Mango & Hibiscus (for dry & damaged Hair); Purifying Lemon Tee Tree & Grapefruit (for flat & oily hair); and Defining Baobab & Rosehip (for curly & frizzy hair). The B Corp certified brand worked with a sustainable farming partner to help source its ingredients which helps local communities, reduces byproduct waste, and respects the planet.
The paper cartons off 80% less plastic, water-resistant and tested real-life/extreme conditions, and are verified by How2Recycle.
The haircare line is available at Whole Foods nationwide, BaboBotanicals.com and Amazon.
