In the next few weeks (and especially Cyber Monday), workers will no doubt be tempted to surf the Internet for killer discounts—but they need to remember, the boss may be watching.
More than half of workers (53%) say they spend at least some work time holiday shopping on the Internet, an increase of 3% from last year, according to CareerBuilder's annual Cyber Monday survey. Of this group that dare to shop on their boss’s nickel, 43% spend an hour or more doing so, compared to 42% percent from last year.
But buyers beware—11% of employers say they've fired someone for holiday shopping on the Internet while at work (compared to 12% last year).
The survey found a higher percentage of workers in IT (68%) and financial services (65%) industries online shop compared to those in other industries.
The national survey was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CareerBuilder from August 11 to September 7, 2016, and included a representative sample of 3,133 full-time workers and 2,379 hiring managers and human resource professionals across industries and company sizes in the private sector.
