Japanese-based cosmetics giant Shiseido Company held its R&D Strategy Conference last month. The company, which was ranked No. 5 in Happi’s 2021 International Top 30, used the event to showcase its new research and development philosophy called “Dynamic Harmony.”
Shiseido also shared recent breakthroughs and new alliances that will drive NPD and its approach to cosmetic science in 2022 and beyond.
NEW ACCORDS & ALLIANCES
At the conference, Shiseido Company reported several new accords.
The company signed an advisory agreement with neuroscientist Dr. Nobuko Nakano, who will serve as an advisor. The alliance is designed to support its goals to to create multifaceted value centering around skincare and ranging from sun care and makeup to beauty equipment and inner beauty (supplements). According to Shiseido, Nakano has “sharp insight” into the essence of humans and society based on neuroscience and psychology and communicates scientific knowledge in an easy-to-understand manner.
Shiseido Company has also tapped Professor Masaru Tomita, director general of The Institute for Advanced Biosciences, Keio University, as an advisor. Going forward, Shisiedo will set up GIC Tomita Laboratory where Tomita will provide direct guidance within Shiseido’s Global Innovation Center (GIC), and aim to create what the beauty companies calls “ unprecedented innovations that lead future businesses in a new way based on out-of-the-book thinking, and foster a new culture in our R&D organization.”
Shiseido also announced a new joint research agreement with the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IBMP RAS) in Moscow, Russia. Going forward, Shiseido will participate in the SIRIUS project, an international research project conducted by IBMP RAS in collaboration with the Human Research Program (HRP) of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and work together with an occupational health physician to conduct “research on stress assessment through remote measurement of symmetry and movement in facial expression”.
The SIRIUS project aims to study the impact of long-term isolation in a confined space on cosmonauts` and astronauts’ physical and mental health in preparation for manned expedition to the Moon and Mars. The test, which was scheduled to start last month, is being conducted in a closed-off environment for eight months.
The research ties into Shiseido’s research approach of “Inside/Outside." It will explain the impacts of stress on the skin and body, aiming to develop value in the skin beauty field that provides comprehensive care for the mind and body. Shiesido use these research results to develop a stress evaluation method under non-contact and remote conditions.
UV LIGHT FOR SKINCARE
At the R&D conference, Shiseido showcased its work around technology that converts ultraviolet light into light that brings about beneficial effects on the skin. Inspired by photosynthesis, the study led to a discovery of the effect of Spirulina extract obtained from algae and fluorescent zinc oxide derived from natural minerals to efficiently convert ultraviolet light into visible light that could successfully restore skin damage caused by ultraviolet light and also enhance the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, according to Shiseido.
Through the application of this technology, Shiseido says it will not only protect customers from sunlight but also make use the sun, thereby creating a future in which our customers can enjoy their daily lives more actively and freely.
The results of this study were partly presented at the 31st International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) Congress 2020 in Yokohama, Japan.
SECOND SKIN
Shiseido Company also reported developments around the evolution of “Second Skin” technology, which was acquired in 2018 from Olivo Laboratories in the US.
As it has previously reported, “Second Skin” technology has the effect of “immediate remodeling of undereye bags.” Shiseido said it has recently revealed the effect of “immediate remodeling of sagging cheeks (nasolabial lines / marionette lines). In addition, Shiseido said it has also created values that go beyond makeup effects such as “improving sagging skin and wrinkles with repeated application” and “enhancing ingredient penetration”. Some of these research results were presented at the IFSCC 2021 Cancún Conference, which was held in October.
INNER BEAUTY
Shiseido also unveiled a new ingestible beauty brand called Inryu. The three product line—which includes Advanced Radiance, Night Ritual+ and Laser Refine—will be available in Shiseido The Store in Japan starting in January, and through e-commerce platforms in China starting in March 2022.
CORPORATE MOVES
In corporate news, Shiseido Company said it has decided to abolish its current corporate officer system and shift to a management system centering on executive officers effective January 1, 2022.
