FRANCE: Naturex has launched a comprehensive sustainability program covering every aspect of its activities. By so-urcing raw materials from all over the world and developing innovative ingredients that combine performance with sustainability, the company has succeeded in shaping its business around practices, which respect the world and its people. In order to further ongoing efforts in this area, the group is implementing a comprehensive program to define and expand sustainable practices.
Gathering a multi-disciplinary team from all aspects of Naturex operations, a dedicated sustainability committee is driving the entire program and has developed a specific set of sustainability principles for the company. Led by Serge Sabrier, member of the company’s management committee, the sustainability committee ensures that all aspects of day-to-day business operations and growth strategy are conducted in accordance with a set of principles explicitly set out by Naturex in support of Environmental Stewardship, Economic Prosperity, and Social Responsibility.
The company has appointed Chris Kilham as Naturex’s “sustainability ambassador.”
In other news, Naturex and the University of Avignon have created a joint research laboratory to explore eco-friendly extraction processes. The new unit, known as ORTESA (French acronym for Optimization and Research on Extraction Technologies and Alternative Solvents), aims at better understanding the principles of eco-friendly extraction.
ORTESA aims to develop better science for botanical and eco-friendly extraction, a principle that is relatively new to the industry. The process incorporates sustainability in all the steps that are critical for extraction: choice of the solvent or technologies, utilization of by-products, reduction of unitary operations and limitation of chemical alteration of botanical extracts.
The joint research laboratory will be co-headed by Antoine Bily, Naturex R&D director, and Professor Farid Chemat, who is also in charge of the Green research laboratory at the University of Avignon. The Green research team is a leading academic laboratory that investigates innovative technologies for botanical extraction. Leaders in their respective fields, Naturex and Green have decided to combine their skills and experience.
