The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) has unveiled three new education seminars that will be held on Dec. 10, 2018 in New York City—the day before the start of the 72nd Annual Scientific Meeting & Technology Showcase in the city. These new seminars include:
- Analysis & Cosmetic Use of Natural Oils (8:30am - 12:30pm). The use of natural oils continues to grow exponentially in all areas of the personal care market. This half-day seminar, jointly hosted by the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS) and SCC, aims to help cosmetic chemists select the most efficacious and authentic oils for your formulation while meeting today’s marketing needs for natural and storied ingredients. Presentations will focus on natural oil attributes such as fatty acid distribution, unsaturation, oxidative stability, and unsaponifiables and how these various attributes affect performance in personal care formulations. Additionally, presentations will discuss the marketing impact and appeal of natural oils as related to cosmetics and personal care. Speakers will include experts from both the AOCS and the SCC.
- Introduction to Surfactants (8:30am - 12:30pm). This introductory short course will introduce participants to basic concepts required to establish surfactant structure-property-performance linkages for optimized applications in cosmetic and personal care applications. The course will build a basic understanding of key aspects of surfactant chemistry/structure, discuss self-assembly in surfactant systems including highlighting properties of some of the key surfactant microstructures encountered in personal care products such as wormlike micelles and lamellar gel phases. In addition, the course will highlight characterization requirements that will allow insights into key performance controlling properties such as interfacial and rheological properties which have direct impact on functional as well as sensory performance. The instructor is Professor Samiul Amin, PhD, who is currently Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Manhattan College. He also holds an Adjunct Associate Professorship at Long Island University, School of Pharmacy. Prior to joining academia in March 2018, Amin worked in industry for the past 20 years working across engineering, R&D and innovation management for global multinationals such as ExxonMobil, Unilever, L’Oréal and Malvern Instruments in Asia, Europe and the US.
- GMO: A Primer for the Personal Care Industry (1:30pm - 5:30pm). A half-day seminar, jointly hosted by AOCS and SCC, this event aims to provide a broad overview of the GMO issue, both in terms of its application to cosmetics and personal care, as well as lessons we can learn from the food industry. Seminar topics to be covered include the history of GMO; realities of GMO in the supply chain and identity preservation; regulatory issues surrounding GMO (including clean label issues), testing for GMO; consumer perception in food and personal care; and a panel discussion. Speakers will include subject matter experts from both the AOCS and the SCC.
