The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that it will hold a public meeting on testing methods for asbestos in talc and cosmetic products containing talc. It will be held Feb. 4, 2020 at the FDA’s White Oak Campus in Silver Spring, MD. A webcast will be available.
More meeting specifics, including information on how to register for the meeting, will be made available soon through a Federal Register Notice, and on the FDA public meetings website.
For the past several years, Johnson & Johnson and other manufacturers have faced lawsuits from consumers who charge that use of talc-based personal care products cause cancer. In October, J&J recalled a single lot recall of its Johnson's baby powder due to a sub-trace level of chrysotile asbestos contamination. Nearly a year ago, J&J refuted a Reuters' article about the safety of its talc-based products.
As a result of the reports and consumer lawsuits, J&J created a website, www.factsabouttalc.com. In addition, the FDA has a website of its own devoted to consumer questions regarding talc. See: www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetic-ingredients/talc
