NovaLash uses a unique surgical-quality adhesive to create red carpet-worthy lashes.
By Joanna Cosgrove
Eyelash extensions are all the rage, thanks to red carpet trendsetters. But here’s a fast fact: the adhesive in almost all eyelash extension kits can contain formaldehyde, a potential carcinogen. That’s something Sophy Merszei, founder and CEO of NovaLash Corporation, set out to change. A cosmetic chemist and molecular biologist, Ms. Merszei tasked a staff of physicians, optometrists and research scientists to create a first of its kind, surgical quality, US Pharmaceutical (USP) Grade tested adhesive, formulated for maximum lash wear, flexibility and above all, safety.
Because the eye area is so sensitive and delicate, NovaLash’s team of physicians and bio-chemists formulated Platinum Bond, the first formaldehyde-free lash extension adhesive (The American Extended-Wear Cosmetics Association guidelines define “formaldehyde-free” as less than 0.001% by volume). And for certified technicians, there’s patent pending NovaLash Platinum Bond Lash Adhesive Extra Strength Formula which is designed for added flexibility and heat resistance for clients who, for example, enjoy time in the sauna or steam room. The formula is U.S. Pharmaceutical Grade in Purity.

NovaLash Lash Extensions are for professional use only. Prior to application, clients must wash their eye area with mild cleanser. The use of eye makeup removers containing polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, or any other glycol-based ingredients will result in failure of lashes to bond. Extensionsare

Because the formula and the corresponding application technique is relatively new to the U.S. and Europe, NovaLash provides comprehensive training taught by the company’s head of Research and Development, Molecular Biologist, Veronika Garga. The one day (8-9 hour) course includes a two hour Theory Section to cover the science behind the procedure, safety and advanced techniques designed to produce longer lasting lash applications. A “hands on” session entails at least five hours of hands-on training. At the end of the session, students take a theoretical and practical certification test before being certified to apply the lashes.
The NovaLash Eyelash Extension Starter Kit contains all the items required for professionals to get started and includes four lengths of NovaLash Eyelash Extensions (6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm), surgical quality stainless steel forceps (straight or curved), a folding lash comb and brush, pharmaceutical grade non-fume adhesive (for sensitive eyes), adhesive remover, a mini-fan for curing the adhesive, eyelid shaped lower lash protectors, 3M brand medical tape for sensitive skin, aftercare instructions and an instructional DVD. The kit retails for $469 and serves approximately 200 clients when used as directed.
Also sold separately, NovaLash’s 10ml oil and water proof Lash Adhesive retails for $139, while the 10ml extra strength Platinum Bond Lash Adhesive retails for $160. For more information, log onto www.novalash.com.
