Elizabeth Arden seems to be weathering the decline of Britney Spears quite well. Sales increased 3.7% to nearly $955 million, while net income declined about 10% to $34.2 million. During the year, the company completed the acquisitions of the brand portfolio from Riviera Concepts Inc., a prestige fragrance company, and Sovereign Sales, a distributor of fragrances to mass retail customers in North America.E. Scott Beattie, chairman and chief executive officer, noted that while results were in line with previous guidance, they were short of original budget for fiscal 2006. He blamed external factors including the May Company and Federated Department Stores merger and resultant store closings, inventory reduction initiatives led by Wal-Mart, Target and other mass retailers and the general weakness experienced in the European markets in the first half of the fiscal year. Internationally, business in China and Taiwan is growing rapidly, with net sales more than doubling in the fourth quarter.
For the nine months ended March 31, 2007, net sales rose 15.7% to $884.8 million. Net income fell about 20% to $27.7 million.
